Oakland native, David Worm, began his singing career in 1985 with the Bay Area groups Jazz Mouth and Vocal Front. In 1989 he became a founding member of Bobby McFerrin’s Voicestra ensemble and has remained a regular performer with Mcferrin, being featured on recordings, including Medicine Music and Vocabularies and touring with Mcferrin’s Hard Choral and improvisational group Gimme 5.
David is also one of the original founding members of the a-cappella group, SoVoSo, an internationally acclaimed vocal ensemble which has released 6 albums and tours worldwide.
Currently, other performing projects include touring and teaching in the innovative and improvisational trio, WeBe 3, performing and recording with the acclaimed acoustic duo, Glass House, and collaborating with spoken word artist, PC Munoz and his band, Left Hook.
David has worked extensively with the Bay Area Dance community, having scored or co-written numerous original full length works for, Robert Moses Kin, (one of these projects being a recipient of an Isadora Duncan Award), Oberlin Dance, Tandy Beal, Project Bandaloop (an Isadora Duncan Award nominee), Axis Dance (Meet the Composer Grant recipient and another Isadora Duncan Award nominee), Cherie Carson, June Watenabe, and Suzanne Gallo.
David’s music has also been used in scoring the film documentaries “StepUp” for Canadian Director Tamas Wormser, and “Love Francesca” for Producer Julie LaSalle.
David has over 80 record credits as a session singer, vocal percussionist, and writer and his original music has been recorded by groups both nationally and internationally.
As the artistic director for Sing for Your Life!, an Annual 12 Hour CircleSinging Celebration, and the inspiration behind the 3rd Wednesday Community CircleSing events co-sponsored by First Congregational Church in Oakland, David has built a legendary singing community supported by volunteers and community voices, sustained since 2002.
He regularly teaches Circle Singing Facilitation, Vocal Improvisation and Vocal Percussion in schools and other places of learning throughout the U.S. and Europe, expressing his passion and commitment to use his evocative voice and this Art to foster generosity of spirit, and empower each singer’s heart to be expressed through their music.
